Three children in every classroom have a diagnosable mental health problem, one in 5 has an eating disorder and one in twelve self-harms. Safe is a youth-led project, which aims to raise awareness of mental health, reduce suicide breaking down, stigma, getting young people to talk about their feelings, recognise the danger signs and to seek support, if and when they need it. SAFE was established in October 2011 in memory of James Naylor, a young man from Tonbridge who tragically took his own life at the age of 23.

Starting from one committee made up of 6 young people in Tonbridge, SAFE now has several committees of young people made of 6th formers from schools around Kent in the areas of Maidstone, Malling, Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Dartford and Gravesend. Each committee has put on different events in their areas, from a concert held at the Tunbridge wells forum, data collection via surveys in different schools, creative art days and youth conferences, as well as appearing and speaking at different charity events.

Safe aims to have a presence within local schools providing information and peer support. This includes assemblies and discussion groups as well as drop in sessions called SAFE Spaces for students to access information in lunch time at school and in their free time in the community.
