Martha Turland is Senior Lecturer in Cultural & Critical Studies and co-ordinates the module for the Graphic Design and Illustration BA Hons courses at the University of Brighton. Her professional career spans both design practice and design history. Martha worked on large and medium-sized commercial design projects and after completing the MA in Design History at Middlesex University, combined studio practice with teaching design and visual culture and theory at LCC (University of Arts London) and joined Brighton in 2007.

Martha has research interests in contemporary medical illustration and in drawing practices in health care. She is currently working in collaboration with Dr Philippa Lyon on a pilot research project to investigate manual drawing in the clinical consultation. She has presented at the international Graphic Medicine conferences (2013 and 2014) and the international Illustration Symposium and co-curated the drawing-based Utility of the Line exhibition at Brighton.
