Dr Maria Vaccarella is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medical Humanities at the Centre for the Humanities and Health at King’s College London, where she also teaches for the Department of Comparative Literature. Her research interests include cultural representations of chronic illnesses (especially, epilepsy), critical disability studies, and narrative medicine. Her current research project focuses on narratives of ageing in the West: it builds upon her long-standing interest in the management of narrative unreliability, resulting from impairment of cognition or consciousness.

One of her most recent projects is Staging Transitions ( http://www.kcl.ac.uk/cultural/culturalinstitute/showcase/current/kei/engagementdiversity/Staging-Transitions/index.aspx ), in collaboration with inclusive theatre company 'FaceFront' ( http://www.facefront.org/ ), supported by King’s Cultural Institute. Staging Transitions addresses the need for better transition planning for and with young people with learning difficulties and disabilities through an inclusive drama intervention.
