“Born in Maidstone, Kent, I attended Maidstone TechnicalSchool for Girls then worked as a Children’s Nurse until I opted for a more adventurous life. I travelled to Switzerland for work. After trying several jobs, from nurse to waitress and anything in between, I ended up in thePestalozzi Children’s Village. This was very hard work for little financial reward but the upside was meeting the children of many nationalities and theSwiss themselves who always welcomed me into their homes. After three and half years, I returned to England prepared to follow my sister to America. I took a job as a nanny so I could save for the fare but I met my future husband and the rest is history. My husband died in 2004, which is why I have moved back to my birthplace, near my children, but not too near. Nowadays, as I cannot get out much because of arthritis (the curse of the elderly) and also being in my twilight years,I spend much of my time on my iPad emailing friends and family, writing, reading or playing games. This is the fault of my wonderful daughter in law without whom I would still be using a pad and pencil to jot down my thoughts, and sending up smoke signals to communicate. Though I am alone, I am not lonely, even at night (the worst time) because I can open my iPad and communicate with the world. When you consider that when I was a child, our school desks had inkwells set in them. Amazing”.
