Lucy Lyons is lecturer in drawing research at City and Guilds of London Art School and visiting lecturer in MEd at Imperial College,London where she teaches visual note taking for surgeons. She explores drawing as a participatory experiential activity that involves slow looking. Intervention, collaboration and gifting are central elements to her work.Her encounters are with material real,shocking and horrific as well asoverlooked, undervalued, overly familiar aspects within medicals ciences.

As artist in residence at Barts Pathology Museum she coordinated a UCL and UAL Share Academy funded project titled ‘DrawingParallels’, investigating audience responses to pathological specimens. Her PhD research was based at the Royal College of Surgeons of England where she investigated Fybrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), an extremely rare congenital condition where connective tissue turns to bone. She was Postdoctoral fellow at Medical Museion, Faculty of health and medical sciences, University of Copenhagen where she explored drawing to express the experiencesof ageing.

She has presented at many international conferences on medical museum collections, art and anatomy and art in health as well as published articles about drawing for Tracey Journal of drawing and Visualisation Research and Atrium Report of the Northwestern Medical Humanities & BioethicsProgram.

Lucy has had solo exhibitions at the Hunterian Museum London,Medical Museion Copenhagen, Fábrica de Braço de Prata Lisbon and Panum InstituteCopenhagen. Group shows she has been invited to show in include Post MortemVesalius at Rommelaere Instituut, University of Ghent, Design4Health Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, Anatomica at Dalhousie ArtGallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Ce Qui Fait Fragilité, at Galerie Vivoequidem, Paris and Body is the instrument of the soul at OldOperating Theatre and Herb Garret, London.

She is a member of the Medical Artists’ Association of Great Britain, Co-ordinator of Circle 7, Practicing Communities: Transformative societal strategies of artistic research, Nordic Summer University and is currently “Art/Science/Life” artist in residence at Ipswich Museum. Her commissioned installation at Ipswich Art School Octagon Gallery, In between:hidden spaces will open February 13 and be on display until 29 May 2016.
