Patient As Paper – A visual voice

Emma Barnard MA (RCA) is amixed media artist, specialising in fine art photography, video and sound installations. She has exhibited across England and Europe. Her work deals with social commentary and highlights contemporary issues, encouraging debate surrounding them.

The Patient As Paper project which involved working alongside surgeon Mike Papesch captures visually the essence of being a patient. It depicts in a raw way how it feels to be inside the strange world of the hospital. Work encompasses images from a patient perspective as well as exploring the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship. Attention is drawn to the inevitable de-personalisation that occurs when people are in hospital. Reflection on this makes us more mindful of the human condition.

Artwork takes the form of photographic images, drawings of and drawing on patients. This discourse of subject and object corresponds to the philosopher Michel Foucault’s notion of the ‘medical gaze’. Transference and interdependence are studied and displayed through this medium.

Patient as Paper encourages reflection by doctors, medical professionals and students, on what it is to be a receiver of medical care and the impact this has on people. It gives a visual voice to patients, and reflects some of the harsh realities people endure as part of their pursuit of‘getting better’.
